And the support for this resistance was part of the late Cold War strategy of the American government, part of a response by the Pakistani military government to the idea that the Soviets had just taken over a country immediately adjacent to Pakistan, and a response by Saudi Arabia to what was seen as a dangerous possible expansion of communism in the direction of the Middle East.
